We were There - Gen Jannie Geldenhuys PDF Print E-mail
Written by Arthur D Piercy

General Jannie Geldenhuys, Chief of the South African Defense Force 1985-1990, has recently launched the english edition of his latest book  "We were there - WINNING the WAR for Southern Africa" at The Ditsong National Museum of Military History (formerly the South African National Museum of Military History). The afrikaans version "Ons was daar - was launched early December

Gerda and I had the pleasure of being invited to this book launch. While I was there I had the most interesting conversation with Gen Denis Earp and discovered some strange coincidents.Gen Earp was the Chief of the South African Air Force at the time I had my accident.

Firstly I find out that we share the same birthday -  7th of June.

Then I find out that Gen Earp's Mustang was shot down over North Korea on the 27th September, the exact same day and month that I was shot down in 1987 over Angola.

smiley Maybe all tthe current SAAF pilots must check these facts before flying again smiley

I have been blessed with fantastic friends who are planning to go the extra mile for me so that I can realize my dreams. How does one find the words to thank them enough for the support?

I met Andrew Wood through a mutual friend Brian Wilson. Andrew and I have not even been face to face. We’ve been communicating via Face Book, email and cell phone.

A renewed request for support. Still looking for 1000 (actually now only 941) supporters who are prepaired to donate R100.00 for 10 months.

This will allow me to firstly aquire an engine for the project, then the instruments and finally complete the aircraft.

All assistance will be greatly appreciated. see Power of 10 campaign on this site.

A HUGE Thank you must go out to a great and dear friend Athol Frans from African Pilot Magazine.

In the December issue an amazing article was written by Divan Muler who recapped the details surrounding the fateful day back in 1987.

Thanks for the promotion of my "Power of 10" campaign. If I can get these 1000 souls and supporters then the Seawind will be flying in no time.

Testimonials

Extracts from a testimonial recieved from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)

"I would like to thank Arthur Piercy for inspiring us. We need to always have driven and positive human beings like him, who don't constantly dwell on the ills of the past but on the possibilties of the future" (Zola)

"To me the important points that he made were that one's life is very important and it is that indiviual's responsibility to take care of it no matter what; and that determination can conquerany obstacle" (David)

"I was humbled by his humility, determination and passion for life. Nothing can and will stand in his way and I admire it about him. He just opened my eyes to the fact that if you want to you can, all you need is determination" (Ntombi)

"Indeed your response to a life changing circumstance certainly places you in a special class, somewhere above the rest of us. But your incredible sense of humour, your humaness - those form the bridge that allows ordinary human beings to rub shoulders with you and face their own, smaller situations, encouraged. Thank you for that." Nadia Coetzee : Director: Foreign Qualifications Evaluation and Advisory Services.
